Discover what you can catch throughout the year and why every season offers something special aboard a Jaco Fishing Charter.
One of the questions we hear most often is, "When is the best time to fish in Jacó?"
The answer depends on what you want to catch.
Some anglers travel halfway around the world hoping to release their first Pacific Sailfish. Others dream about battling a Blue Marlin, catching a trophy Roosterfish, or bringing home fresh Yellowfin Tuna for dinner. The good news is that Jacó offers excellent fishing year-round. There is always something biting along Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast.
The key is understanding how the seasons work and which species are most active during different times of the year.
December Through April, Peak Billfish Season
If your dream is to catch sailfish or marlin, this is the time to visit Jacó.
Beginning in December, large numbers of Pacific Sailfish move into the waters off Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast. Fishing continues to improve through January, February, March, and often into April. These months are considered the prime offshore fishing season around Jacó and nearby Los Sueños.
On a good day, anglers aboard Jaco Fishing Charters may raise several sailfish before lunch. Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, and Wahoo are also common visitors to these offshore waters.
One January morning, a family visiting from Texas told us they had never seen a sailfish before. Less than an hour after reaching the fishing grounds, the first fish appeared behind the teasers. By the end of the afternoon, everyone on board had taken turns fighting sailfish, and they were already talking about coming back the following winter.
Those are the days anglers remember for years.
May Through August, Tuna and Dorado Take the Spotlight
As the seasons change, so does the fishing.
Yellowfin Tuna become more consistent, especially when schools of spinner dolphins are working offshore. Dorado also becomes more common, particularly after the first rains begin to wash debris and weed lines into the Pacific.
These fish are aggressive, powerful, and excellent on the table. Many anglers who head offshore during the green season return to the dock with fresh tuna or mahi mahi for dinner.
Blue Marlin continue to show up during these months, and experienced captains know exactly where to look depending on water temperature and current conditions.
September Through November, Quiet Beaches, Great Fishing
Many visitors assume the rainy season means poor fishing.
That simply is not true.
While afternoon showers become more common, mornings are often calm with excellent ocean conditions. In fact, many local anglers enjoy fishing during this time of year because there are fewer boats on the water and the fishing can be outstanding.
Yellowfin Tuna remain active, marlin continue to patrol offshore waters, and inshore species stay hungry along the reefs and rocky coastline.
Some of our favorite fishing days happen in October, when the ocean feels like it belongs entirely to you.
Inshore Fishing Is Excellent All Year
Offshore fishing may have its peak months, but inshore fishing around Jacó never really slows down.
Roosterfish patrol the beaches and rocky points throughout the year. Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Jack Crevalle, Spanish Mackerel, and Amberjack provide steady action regardless of the season.
Many anglers book one offshore day followed by an inshore trip. It is the perfect way to experience everything Costa Rica's Central Pacific has to offer.
One day, you could be releasing sailfish twenty miles offshore. The next time, you might be fighting a thirty or forty-pound roosterfish within sight of the beach.
That variety is one of the reasons so many anglers return to Jacó.
You Do Not Need Perfect Conditions
Fishing is never guaranteed.
Some days, the sailfish are everywhere. On other days, the tuna steal the show. Occasionally, a big Cubera Snapper decides to eat a bait meant for a marlin.
That is what makes fishing exciting.
The captains fishing out of Jacó spend hundreds of days on the water every year. They watch water temperature, currents, bait movement, and bird activity before deciding where to fish. Their experience often makes the difference between an average day and an unforgettable one.
Planning Your Fishing Trip
If your main goal is billfish, plan your visit between December and April.
If you want a combination of tuna, dorado, and marlin, plus excellent weather, late spring and summer are ideal.
If you enjoy quieter marinas, fewer boats, and productive fishing, do not overlook the green season.
There is no single perfect month to fish Jacó.
There is simply the best season for the species you want to catch.
Every Season Has Its Own Story
Some anglers left talking about the sailfish that jumped six times behind the boat.
Others remember the giant roosterfish that nearly reached the rocks before the captain turned it.
Some cannot stop talking about the fresh tuna they enjoyed with their family that evening.
Every fishing trip is different, and that is exactly why people return year after year.
