One of the first questions we hear from visitors planning a fishing trip is surprisingly simple.
"I've never been fishing before. Can I still do this?"
The answer is absolutely.
In fact, many of the anglers who book Jaco Fishing Charters have little or no fishing experience. Some have never held a fishing rod before arriving in Costa Rica. Others may have fished on a lake years ago but have never been offshore.
That does not matter.
Your captain and crew are there to help you every step of the way.
Fishing Is for Everyone
Sportfishing in Costa Rica is not reserved for experienced anglers.
Families fish together.
Couples celebrate anniversaries on the water.
Groups of friends spend a day chasing sailfish before heading back to Jacó for dinner.
We have welcomed children catching their first fish and retired anglers finally crossing a Pacific Sailfish off their bucket list.
Everyone starts somewhere.
The Crew Does the Hard Work
One of the biggest surprises for first-time anglers is how much the crew takes care of.
Before leaving the dock, your rods are rigged.
The bait is prepared.
The tackle is ready.
During the day, the captain watches the water, the birds, the currents, and the electronics while the mate prepares teasers, changes bait, and keeps everything running smoothly.
When a fish bites, they guide you through the entire process.
They will tell you when to pick up the rod.
When to reel.
When to slow down.
When to let the fish run.
By the end of the trip, many first-time anglers feel like they have been fishing for years.
Learning From Local Captains
Fishing these waters takes experience.
The captains who operate Jaco Fishing Charters spend hundreds of days on the Pacific every year. They know where bait gathers, how changing currents affect fishing, and where certain species are likely to be found during different seasons.
Just as important, they know how to teach.
Good captains enjoy introducing people to sportfishing.
There is nothing quite like watching someone catch their first sailfish.
Offshore or Inshore?
If this is your first fishing trip, you may be wondering which option is better.
Offshore fishing targets species such as:
Pacific Sailfish
Blue Marlin
Yellowfin Tuna
Dorado
Wahoo
These trips are ideal for anyone wanting to experience Costa Rica's famous blue water fishing.
Inshore fishing stays closer to the coastline and targets:
Roosterfish
Cubera Snapper
Jack Crevalle
Grouper
Spanish Mackerel
Many beginners enjoy inshore fishing because there is often steady action throughout the day and the boat stays closer to shore.
Others choose offshore because catching a sailfish has always been a dream.
There is no wrong choice.
What Should You Bring?
You do not need to arrive with expensive fishing gear.
Everything you need is already on the boat.
We recommend bringing:
A hat
Polarized sunglasses
Sunscreen
Light clothing
Comfortable shoes with non-marking soles
A camera or phone for photos
Most boats also provide water, soft drinks, beer, snacks, and lunch on full-day trips.
Fishing Is Never Guaranteed
One thing we always tell our guests is that fishing is unpredictable.
Some days, the sailfish seem to be everywhere.
On other days, the tuna decides to steal the show.
Occasionally, a giant roosterfish becomes the highlight of the trip.
That uncertainty is part of what makes fishing exciting.
The captains cannot control nature.
What they can do is work hard, adapt to changing conditions, and give you the best opportunity possible.
More Than Catching Fish
Many first-time visitors remember things that have nothing to do with fishing.
Watching dolphins swim beside the boat.
Seeing a humpback whale surface nearby.
Spotting sea turtles floating peacefully in the Pacific.
Watching pelicans dive into schools of baitfish.
Costa Rica's coastline is full of wildlife, and every trip offers something different.
A Memory That Lasts
One family from Colorado joined us during their vacation with two teenagers who had never been fishing.
They were nervous at first.
The mate patiently explained how everything worked and encouraged them throughout the morning.
Just before lunch, one of the teenagers hooked a Pacific Sailfish.
After a twenty-minute fight, the fish was released safely beside the boat.
Back at the dock, his father smiled and said,
"I think you just created a fisherman."
That is why we love what we do.
