Why Jacó Is One of Costa Rica's Best Fishing Destinations
Ask ten experienced anglers where they would fish if they had only a few days in Costa Rica, and chances are several would mention Jacó.
That is not because Jacó is the biggest town on the Pacific coast. It is not because it has the fanciest marina or the most expensive boats. The reason is simple: Jacó puts anglers close to some of the most productive fishing grounds in Costa Rica.
Every year, thousands of anglers travel here hoping to catch sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado, roosterfish, snapper, and dozens of other species. Some are experienced fishermen who travel the world chasing billfish. Others are families looking to spend a day on the water during a vacation. The beauty of Jacó is that both groups can find exactly what they are looking for.
One of the biggest advantages of fishing from Jacó is location. Unlike many destinations around the world where boats spend hours running offshore before they even start fishing, anglers fishing from Jacó often reach blue water in less than an hour.
That means more fishing time.
A typical full day aboard one of the many Jaco Fishing Charters leaves around seven in the morning and returns around four in the afternoon. On many days, anglers spend seven or more of those hours actively fishing.
That is one reason why so many repeat visitors return year after year.
The waters off Jacó sit between two of Costa Rica's most famous fishing destinations, Herradura Bay and Quepos. Just north is Los Sueños Marina, considered one of the top sportfishing marinas in the world. To the south lies Quepos, home to Marina Pez Vela and the Offshore World Championship.
Few places offer anglers access to so much productive water within such a short distance.
During the peak billfish season from December through April, offshore boats regularly encounter sailfish. Some days, anglers may raise multiple fish before lunch. Blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and wahoo are also common visitors to these waters.
One visiting angler told us after a January trip that he had spent years dreaming about catching a sailfish. Within two hours of leaving the dock, he was fighting his first one. By the end of the day, he had released three.
That is the kind of fishing story that keeps people coming back to Jacó.
Of course, not everybody wants to run offshore chasing billfish.
Some of the most exciting fishing in Costa Rica happens within sight of shore.
The rocky points, reefs, islands, and beaches around Jacó hold an impressive variety of gamefish. Roosterfish are the star attraction. These aggressive predators are famous for their distinctive dorsal fins and incredible fighting ability.
Many anglers who come to Costa Rica dreaming of marlin leave talking about roosterfish instead.
Cubera snapper are another favorite. These powerful fish live around rocky structures and can reach impressive sizes. Hooking a large cubera near the rocks often turns into a battle of strength and timing.
Jack crevalle, grouper, mackerel, and amberjack round out a fishery that provides action throughout the year.
One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is that you do not need a giant boat to catch fish in Costa Rica.
Some of the best captains in the area fish aboard boats in the 28 to 32-foot range. These vessels are perfectly capable of reaching offshore grounds while remaining versatile enough to fish closer to shore when conditions are right.
As local captains often say, fish do not care how big your boat is.
They care where your bait is.
Another reason Jacó has become so popular is convenience.
The drive from San José International Airport takes roughly ninety minutes. Visitors can arrive in Costa Rica in the afternoon and be fishing the following morning.
The town itself offers plenty of hotels, restaurants, vacation rentals, shops, and nightlife. Families can enjoy beaches, ATV tours, ziplining, waterfalls, surfing, and wildlife tours while anglers spend a day on the water.
That combination of great fishing and easy travel is hard to beat.
Fishing in Jacó is not always about numbers. Sometimes it is about moments.
It is watching a sailfish light up behind the teaser.
It is hearing the drag scream as a roosterfish heads for the rocks.
It is seeing dolphins riding the bow wave on the run offshore.
It is the stories shared back at the dock after a long day on the water.
Those experiences are what make Jacó one of Costa Rica's best fishing destinations.
Whether you are a first-time angler looking for a new adventure or a seasoned fisherman chasing your next trophy catch, Jacó offers something special.
The fish are here.
The captains are here.
And your next fishing story is waiting to be written.
