What Makes Roosterfish So Special?
Roosterfish are unlike anything else you’re likely to hook during a Costa Rica fishing vacation.
Their most recognizable feature is the row of long dorsal spines that rise above the fish like a rooster’s comb. In Costa Rica they are commonly called pez gallo.
They are powerful coastal predators built to chase baitfish through shallow Pacific water. When a roosterfish takes a bait, the fight can begin with an explosive run toward deeper water or nearby structure.
They can grow into very large fish, which is one reason serious inshore anglers travel specifically to the Eastern Pacific hoping to catch one.

How Do You Catch Roosterfish?
One of the most effective ways to target roosterfish around Jacó is with live bait.
The exact plan depends on conditions, but a typical inshore day may begin by locating or catching fresh bait before moving toward beaches, rocks, islands and other areas where roosterfish are feeding.
